How does oud form in the tree?

Oud is not ordinary tree wood, but the result of a long battle inside the Aquilaria tree. When the tree is wounded or certain fungi enter it, it secretes in self-defense a dark aromatic resin that saturates its fibers over years, and this resin specifically is what we call oud. This is why most Aquilaria trees contain no oud at all, and this is also why the longer the formation period and the greater the resin density, the higher the value, reaching its peak in "sinking" pieces that sink in water from the heaviness of their oil.

Correct storage

Keep your oud in a tightly sealed glass or metal container, away from moisture, direct sunlight, and heat sources. Moisture may bring mold, and light and heat gradually evaporate the aromatic oils. Well-stored oud does not spoil; in fact, some items increase in depth of scent with age as happens with matured pieces.

Burning methods

The traditional charcoal method: light a charcoal disc until it glows and is covered by a light ash, then place a piece of oud weighing 1 to 2 grams on its edge, not directly in the middle of the ember, so you get the scent without rapid burning. As for the electric burner, set it to a medium heat and start with a small amount, for it brings out the layers of scent precisely and without heavy smoke, and it suits offices and enclosed gatherings.

How do you detect quality yourself?

Three practical tests: first the sink test, place the piece in water; the more it sinks or nears sinking, the higher the resin density it indicates. Second the cold scent, rub the piece with your hand and smell it without burning; good wood exudes a clear scent even cold. Third the cross-section inspection, look at the dark veins in the cross-section; their density and spread are a sign of resin, while a predominance of light wood means a lighter grade.
