This self-formed resin is natural oud, and because most trees never go through this battle at all, natural oud remains rare by nature, and oud harvesters spend days deep in the forests searching for the few trees that bear it.

And this free formation has an important consequence to understand before buying: variation between pieces is an authentic trait, not a manufacturing flaw. Two pieces from the same tree may differ in resin density, vein color, and even scent details, because each part of the tree fought its own battle. The connoisseur sees value in this uniqueness, for the scent of natural oud when burned does not explode all at once but develops in layers: a woody opening, then a resinous depth, sweet or sharp depending on the origin, then a long, quiet tail.

And in full honesty: natural is not the most suitable choice for everyone. Quality and grading: how do we sort natural oud specifically?

Because natural oud does not come off a uniform production line, precise grading becomes the guarantee. We apply three complementary inspections to every batch: the sink test in water to measure resin density, for the more a piece sinks or nears sinking, the higher its grade; then the cold scent by rubbing the piece and smelling it without burning, for good natural oud exudes a woody, resinous scent even cold; then the cross-section inspection by looking at the penetration of the dark veins into the fibers, because real resin dwells in the depth of the wood, not its surface.

After the inspection, each batch is classified within our declared scale: daily for frequent use, then commercial for resale, then excellent the higher in resin, then luxury for gatherings and occasions, and at the top collectors' grade for rare high-sinking pieces.

The trees that form resin naturally do not grow in orderly plantations, but in the depths of the forests of Kalimantan, Papua, and Sumatra, where local oud harvesters know how to read the trees generation after generation: which trunk bears the resin and which is empty wood. This extraction is harder and rarer than any organized production, for a single trip may take days and return with only a few kilograms, and here the true difference of natural oud from any alternative begins.

Natural and enhanced: the scientific difference without bias

The difference is not in the seller's honesty but in the source of the scent. In natural, all the aromatic compounds come from resin the tree formed itself over years, so the scent comes complex, evolving, and slightly different from one piece to another. In enhanced, real wood lower in resin is taken and saturated with concentrated aromatic oils and compounds, so a strong, stable scent comes out, uniform between pieces and at a much lower cost. Enhanced has its audience and legitimate advantages: dense smoke, a predictable result, and a price that allows intensive daily burning, and you'll find it in the enhanced oud collection. The only problem is selling enhanced as natural, and that is what we reject by explicitly declaring the type of each product.

How do you verify a "100% natural" claim?

Four practical tests that need no laboratory: first the cold scent, rub the piece and smell it; natural is woody, resinous, and quiet, while the one with additions exudes a sharp aromatic note resembling ready-made perfumes. Second the burning behavior, natural develops in gradual layers, while the boosted one explodes with a strong scent from the first second then fades noticeably. Third the texture and cross-section, break a small piece or look at its cross-section; the resin of natural is penetrating deep into the fibers, while saturation leaves a shiny oily trace concentrated near the surface. Fourth the logic of price, for a kilogram of high-resin natural at a trivial price is a warning sign in itself.

Why does the price of natural vary this much?

Because you are not paying for weight but for resin and rarity together. A pack of Black Kalimantan at thirty riyals and pieces exceeding a hundred riyals for the same weight are both honest natural oud, but the first is lighter-resin wood suited to entry and trying, and the second is heavier-resin pieces from rarer regions and a longer formation age. Price variation in natural is a sign of health, not chaos: it is a direct reflection of the variation of what nature itself made.

Storing natural oud: an investment that improves with time

Keep it in a tightly sealed glass or metal container, away from the moisture that brings mold, and from the sun and heat that evaporate the oils. How do I make sure the oud I buy is really natural?
