Our Sumatran slices reside in the commercial grade, which for us is the grade of economic sense: higher in sorting and presence than the light daily types, and kinder in price than the premium natural and the collecting grades. It is the grade from which the merchant buys his core stock and the home its regular supply, because every riyal in it is matched by tangible resin, not a name paid for.

As for inspecting slices specifically, it has its three criteria with us: the evenness of the cut first, for a good slice of consistent thickness ignites evenly and does not break up randomly in the packaging; then the proportion of resin visible in the cross-section, and we accept what has the dark veins extending clearly across the face of the slice; then its freedom from excess pale sapwood, for a little light wood is natural in every slice, but whatever's whiteness dominates its darkness is excluded from its grade. Why slices, not chunks? The nature of the tree and extraction

Resin does not fill the whole Aquilaria tree but concentrates in veins and areas struck by the infection that pushes the tree to secrete it. When the worker extracts these areas, cutting them into flat slices instead of breaking them into random chunks achieves two things: it preserves the extension of the resin vein within the single piece instead of fragmenting it, and it turns the wood's interior into an exposed face the buyer can read. Chunks are faster and cheaper to produce and so dominate the market, but slices are the choice of whoever wants to sell quality exposed, not wrapped in guesswork.

How do you read a slice's cross-section?

Hold the slice toward the light and look at its face as you would read a map: the dark lines and areas, from deep brown to black, are the resin veins, and the longer and more continuously they extend across the slice, the deeper the maturity. The pale, faded-yellow areas are less-saturated wood, and some of it is natural in every commercial grade, but what matters is the dominance and distribution. Then weigh it in your hand: two slices of the same size differ in weight, and the heavier is richer in resin. This same reading is the one our sorters perform before you, and slices let you repeat it yourself on receipt.

Burning slices: whole or broken?

For a long, calm session, place the slice whole on an ash-coated ember: its flat surface touches the heat evenly so the scent rises gradually over the session. And for shorter sessions, break it into halves or thirds with your hand, for it breaks easily along its fibers. The golden rule is always a calm heat: exposed coal burns the aromatic enhancement all at once and turns the woody cleanliness into a sharp smoke, while an ash-coated ember or an electric burner at a low-medium heat brings out the best in Sumatran.

Grinding slices for ma'mul

Storage

Keep the slices in a tightly sealed glass or metal container away from sun, heat, and moisture, and because it is an enhanced type its aromatic oils are closer to the surface: buy what you consume within months, take out only the session's need and reseal immediately. And do not store another oud or perfumes with it in the same container so the signatures do not mix, and the advantage of slices is that they stack flat so they occupy less space and their broken edges are fewer in long storage.

How do I read a slice's quality by eye?

Look at the slice's cross-section: the dark brown-to-black veins are the resin, and the pale areas are less-saturated wood. The more the dark area increases and distributes in extended veins rather than surface patches, the higher the quality. Weigh it in your hand too: the slice heavier relative to its size is richer in resin. And avoid slices dominated by faded white sapwood from end to end.

Are slices suitable for making ma'mul?

Among the best choices for it: the flat slice grinds easily to a uniform fineness surpassing the irregular chunk, and Sumatran's clean woody profile blends with oud oil, amber, and musk without overpowering. How many slices do I need for one session?

Is this oud natural or enhanced?

Are slices suitable for the electric burner?

Yes, indeed the evenness of their thickness makes them ideal for the electric burner's plate: they touch the heat with a regular surface so the scent evaporates in a beautiful gradient.
