Quality and grading: where does Kalimantan fall?

Kalimantan does not reside in a single grade, and this is its great advantage: its internal variety distributes it across three grades of our declared scale. Black represents the origin in the daily grade for whoever wants regular burning without counting, Pontianak and Malinau the naturals in the luxury grade, and Blue at the top of the scale within collectors' grade. A single origin serves you from the first trial pack to the collector's piece.

As for the sorting of Kalimantan specifically, we judge it by three criteria: resin density first, read from the weight of the piece relative to its size and from the depth of the dark color, and it is the deciding factor between Blue and Black; then the honesty of the origin, since we trace every batch to its region on the island and reject the unknown however tempting its price; then the behavior of the scent on heat, for honest Kalimantan opens slowly and develops in layers, while the adulterated gives everything in the first minute then dies out.

Kalimantan is the Indonesian portion of Borneo, the world's third-largest island, covered by tropical rainforests counted among the oldest on Earth, with a soil, rainfall, and humidity that ripen Aquilaria resin at leisure over whole decades. Why is Kalimantan a historic reference in oud?

The oud trade from Borneo is far older than our modern markets: for centuries ships carried the island's aromatic woods from its ports along the Asian trade routes to China, India, and the Arabian Peninsula, and Kalimantan, with its position on the shipping lanes, was the earliest of the archipelago's regions to reach the foreign buyer. This precedence made two things that still stand: a local extraction and sorting expertise accumulated over generations, and a memory of the name among buyers that made Kalimantan in the Gulf a synonym for good Indonesian oud. Blue and Black: the sensory difference and the reason for the price gap

Why 87.60 riyals versus 30 when the base is one? Because oud is priced by resin density, not by bare weight. Blue is selected from the pieces that resin has saturated until they took on their dark bluish color and their heavy weight relative to their size, and these are a small proportion of every batch, so their rarity raises their price. And sensorily you pay for two things you actually feel: more layers of scent unfolding over the session instead of a single note, and a persistence that extends for longer hours. Tips for burning Kalimantan

The first rule: do not rush the judgment, for Kalimantan opens slowly and its most beautiful layers come after the first minutes, and whoever judges it from the first sniff has wronged it. Place the piece on an ash-coated ember, not on exposed coal, or on an electric burner at a low-medium heat, and let the scent rise at leisure. And in the enhanced pure types lower the heat further because their ready oils evaporate faster. Two grams per session hour is a realistic rate that spares you excess, for Kalimantan's diffusion is wider than its softness suggests.

High-resin natural like Pontianak and Malinau is a friend of time: keep it in a tightly sealed glass or metal container away from sun and heat, and many find its scent grows more balanced with the months, so it is among what may rightly be collected long-term. As for the enhanced pure, its oils are closer to the surface and quicker to be affected by air, so buy of it what you consume within months, keep it tightly sealed, and take out only the session's need. "Pure" in our labels means the base of the pieces is one hundred percent real Kalimantan Aquilaria wood with no mixing of cheap filler woods, with a balanced aromatic enhancement that boosts the natural resin already present. Pontianak and Malinau: which is softer?

Malinau is from the north where the colder inland highlands are, and its resin is bolder in presence with a clearer woody depth suiting the majlis. How do I avoid adulterated Kalimantan?
