Weighing: The Ninth Step in the Journey of Oud
Share
After the pieces were graded into grades, comes the step that turns quality into a definite amount: weighing. For oud is sold by weight, and every gram of it is reckoned, and so each grade is weighed on its own with precision. In this article we address why oud is weighed with such care, how it is done, and why the correct weight is part of trust and not merely a number.
Why is oud weighed with precision?
Oud is among the most precious materials by weight, for the price of a single gram of the high grades may reach what many materials do not. And so the precision of weight is not a luxury detail, but the essence of fair dealing: a slight error in weight may mean a tangible difference in price. So oud is weighed on precise scales, and the weights are recorded with care for each grade.
And weighing comes after grading, not before it, because each grade is weighed on its own. The weight of the daily grade is not mixed with that of the luxury, but each is reckoned its own amount. And thus the description of the batch is completed: a declared grade, and a precise weight for each grade.
How is oud weighed and in what unit?
Oud is usually weighed in grams in modern trade, and traditional units may be used in some markets such as the "tola" known in the Gulf and South Asia. And the important thing is that the unit be declared and clear, so that the customer knows exactly what they are buying and compares prices on a unified basis.
The "tola" is a traditional weight unit whose use spread in the perfume and oud trade in the Gulf and South Asia. And with the spread of the gram as a global unit, stating the unit clearly remains a condition for the fair comparison of prices.
The correct weight is trust, not merely a number
The weight that is reckoned is the net weight after processing: after the cleaning, the removal of the white wood, and the drying. For the raw weight before processing is misleading, and the true weight is what remains of resin-bearing essence worthy of the price. And so declaring the net weight precisely is part of the integrity of the description.
And when the customer trusts that the declared weight matches what reaches them, trust is built on a solid foundation. For the customer who receives a piece of a weight that matches what was paid for returns reassured, and the reverse demolishes trust at once. So we consider the precision of weight a commitment, not a courtesy.
From weighing to recording the batch
When the pieces are graded and each grade is weighed precisely, a numeric description of the batch is completed for the store: its types, its grades, and its weights. And it remains for this description to be documented in a record that is kept and referred back to — which is the following step: recording the batch.
And thus weighing has given the batch its definite amount, and paved the way for its documentation. And in the following axis of this journey we move to the tenth step: recording the batch.
What is weighed and priced is the net resin-bearing part after processing, not the raw piece at its first weight. For the true weight of oud is measured after everything of no worth is removed from it.
Every piece was weighed on a precise scale with a declared net weight. At Oud Treasure we bring oud directly from its sources in the islands of Indonesia. Begin with a sample by which you test the scent, the origin, and the grade.
