Arrival at the Importer: The Sixteenth Step in the Journey of Oud
Share
After the shipment is cleared through customs and enters the destination country officially, it reaches the one who awaits it: the importer. This is the link that receives the oud in the customer's country and prepares it for the next step toward the final buyer. In this article we address who the importer is, what happens when the shipment reaches them, and why they are a link in the chain, not its end.
Who is the importer and what is their role?
The importer is the party that receives the shipment in the destination country after it is cleared. The importer may be the store itself in the customer's country, or an agent or distributor who takes on receiving the shipment and preparing it for distribution or sale. And their role is that they are the bridge between the shipment coming from abroad and the final buyer in the local market.
And with the shipment reaching the importer, it has completed its entire international journey: from the forest, to the preparation center, to shipping, to clearance, to the customer's country. And the last part of the journey remains: from the importer to the buyer's hand.
What happens when the shipment reaches the importer?
When the shipment reaches the importer, an initial verification of its conformity with the documents usually takes place: did the stated quantities arrive? Are the grades and weights as described? Are the pieces sound, undamaged on the road? This initial verification ensures that what arrived matches what was sent before it moves on to the following step.
The shipment reaching the importer is not merely a receipt, but a moment in which what arrived is matched against what was documented in the batch record. Here the worth of the precise documentation done earlier shows: every piece is described and can be verified.
The importer is a link in the chain, not its end
It is important to clarify that the shipment reaching the importer is not the end of the oud's journey, but a penultimate station. For the oud has not yet reached the end user, but has reached the link that will bring it closer to them: the importer who will display it, distribute it, or sell it. And the shorter this chain and the fewer the middlemen in it, the fairer the price and the clearer the relationship between the source and the customer.
And we strive as far as possible to shorten this chain, because every extra link adds a cost and distances the customer from the source. For the ideal is that the road from the source to the customer be as short as possible, with no middlemen that are not needed.
From arrival at the importer to customer inspection
When the importer receives the shipment and verifies it preliminarily, a step that concerns the buyer themselves remains: the customer's inspection of the oud upon receipt. For the initial verification at the importer is one thing, and the customer's final inspection is another that concerns the one who will actually acquire the piece. And thus we move from the link of importing to the link of acquisition.
And thus arrival at the importer has brought the oud one last step closer to the customer. And in the following axis of this journey we move to the seventeenth step: customer inspection.
The more middlemen there are between the source and the customer, the higher the cost and the further the customer is from the origin. So shortening the import chain remains an interest for the customer and the source together: a fairer price, and a clearer relationship.
We strive to shorten the road between the source and your hand. At Oud Treasure we bring oud directly from its sources in the islands of Indonesia. Begin with a sample by which you test the scent, the origin, and the grade.
